When I started the thought process for Jack of Clubs I didn’t know whether I wanted a sand or grass background. I’m glad I chose sand, because when this was exhibited at ArtPrize, I caught several people running their fingers over the background to see if the sand and pebbles were painted or real! I wasn’t happy they were touching the painting but it was a compliment of sorts.
I went to a local driving range and purchased the three clubs. I purposely wanted the old persimmon wood driver because of its interesting colors and textures. It was fascinating how many golfers commented on the two left handed clubs.
This painting was a finalist in the 2017 Richeson75 Still Life and Floral International Exhibit, and it won the Award of Excellence from the National Oil & Acrylic Painters’ Society.
